Palácio Nacional da Pena


The Palácio Nacional da Pena is a castle in the Portuguese city of Sintra. It was built on the ruins of a monastery after 1840 by order of the Portuguese titular king and royal consort Ferdinand II. Often referred to as the "Palaces of Sorrows", the name is derived from the former monastery that was dedicated to Nossa Senhora da Pena.


Torre de Belém

The Torre de Belém in the Belém district at the mouth of the Tejo is one of the most famous landmarks in Lisbon. Along with the nearby Mosteiro dos Jerónimos, the tower is one of the few outstanding structures of the Manueline style that survived the Lisbon earthquake in 1755. The topmost, 35 meter high, exposed floor of the tower is now a viewing platform.

The Mosteiro de Belém is one of the most important buildings of Manueline style, a Portuguese variant of the late Gothic, which also contains some elements of the Renaissance. Among other things, it houses the sarcophagi of Fernando Pessoa, Vasco da Gama and Luís de Camões and various Portuguese kings.

Batalha Monastery
