Gustaf and his wife Silvia, who moved into the south wing as their main residence in 1982 and have since then only used the Stockholm Palace as an official residence and for representative purposes. Drottningholm Palace has been under state protection as Byggnadsminne since 1935 and was the first Swedish cultural monument to be included in the UNESCO World Heritage List because of two special buildings, the Chinese Palace and the Drottningholm Theater. Drottningholm Palace is also known as the "Swedish Versailles".

The Øresund Bridge is the world's longest cable-stayed bridge for combined road and rail traffic. The limit is 883 meters. The bridge was opened to traffic on July 1, 2000.
