The capital and largest city is Tunis, located on the northeast coast, which lends the country its name.

Bardo National Museum

The National Museum of Bardo is - before the Archaeological Museum of Sousse - the largest archaeological museum in Tunisia. It is located around 4 km west of the city center of Tunis in the Le Bardo district and, in addition to the Zeugma Mosaic Museum, which opened in Turkey in 2011, has the world's most important collection of Roman mosaics. In addition to the Egyptian Museum in Cairo, the Bardo Museum is the most important archaeological museum in North Africa.

Thugga

Thugga was an ancient city in what is now Tunisia, the remains of which have now been partially exposed and are among the best preserved in North Africa. The city experienced its heyday as part of the Roman province of Africa in the 3rd century AD. The place has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1997.


Amphitheater of El Djem

The amphitheater of El Djem is the best preserved amphitheater in North Africa and with an estimated capacity of 35,000 spectators, it is also the second largest after that of Carthage. Its ruins are in the village of El Djem in central Tunisia, where the ancient city of Thysdrus was located. It has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1979.

Ez Zitouna Mosque

The Ez-Zitouna Mosque is the main mosque in Tunis, the capital of Tunisia. After the Sidi Oqba Mosque in Kairouan, the Ez Zitouna Mosque is the largest and most important mosque in Tunisia. It is located in the center of the Tunis medina. The Aghlabids built it in 856 on a small previous building from the 8th century, but it was later rebuilt and expanded several times.


Antoninus-Pius-Thermen

The Antoninus-Pius-Thermen are a Roman bathing facility from the 2nd century in the ancient city of Carthage in Tunisia. With an extension of 200 meters, they were the largest thermal baths in the African provinces of Rome. The ruins can now be viewed in the Parc archéologique des Thermes d’Antonin and are part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site.


Byrsa

Byrsa was a walled fortress over the port of the ancient city of Carthage in what is now Tunisia. The hill on which this citadel stood was also called Byrsa. When Dido, the mythical founder of Carthage, ended up looking for a home for herself and her followers near what is now Tunis under the rule of Hierbas, she met with great rejection from the Berber population.
